The question of obtaining the
services of an Officer as Adjutant of the Hongkong
Volunteer Corps has been engaging my attention, and I
have consulted the Major-General Commanding Troops on
the subject. He agrees with me that to secure the
thorough efficiency of the Corps which now numbers 373
members, and forms a valuable addition to the strength
of the Garrison, it will be well that an Artillery
Officer be seconded for this service and after considera-
tion he is of opinion that a Captain would be preferable.
The pay of a Captain in the Hongkong and Singapore Bat-
teries is 14 dollars 66 cents per day. For 315 per day
with free quarters, which might be provided in the new
Volunteer Headquarters a suitable Officer might be ab-
tained, and having regard to the necessity for efficiency
I think that the additional cost is justifiable.
2.
In addition to his duties as Adjutant|
of the Volunteer Corps, I propose that the Officer shall
also undertake the drilling of the armed portion of the
